calm after the storm

I am not very calm/brave when it comes to storms. I don’t like them, and I take major precautions for safety.

I was just watching the news about the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa, AL and how many fatalities have already been reported- the number in the 100’s. If you youtube the storm, you can find insane video footage of this tornado. The song I’ve been listening to on repeat in my car is full of simple, yet powerful lyrics:

“Christ is risen from the dead, trampling over death by death, come awake, come awake, come and rise up from the grave…

Oh, Death, where is your sting? oh hell, where is your victory? Oh, church, come stand in the light, the glory of God has defeated the night”.

the sunset last night after all of the storms had passed was like a ray of hope that God created to show these lyrics to be true.

on a lighter note,

2 days til 26.2 miles

1 week until mother’s day weekend & my good friend graduates nursing school!!

& tonight, I am eating KOREAN food. Will post pics of this interesting food.

happy thursday!

about to spend some well needed time in the Bible…and writing in my prayer journal. I have lots to pray about and have not written down my prayers in a while.

a benefit of writing down prayers in a journal- to look back later on and see how the Lord answered the prayers or how He is working or opening/closing doors. and how the intimacy of the relationship becomes deeper and real.

I came across this quote on john piper’s website. oddly, it came up when I was googling “how to pray the Will of God”…interesting.

    • “Here’s a simple way of summarizing sacrificial love: The Spirit filled husband loves his wife not for what she can do for him, but because of what he can do for her. That is exactly how Christ’s love works. He loves us not because there’s something in us that attracts Him, not because He gains any benefit from loving us, but simply because He determined to love us and delights to bestow on us His favor.
Did you realize that love is an act of the will, not a feeling? It is a commitment to the welfare of its object. It is a voluntary devotion. It involves sacrifice, consideration, chivalry, communion, courtesy, and commitment. It is precisely the kind of love you owe your wife. And if you are willing to obey God, by the power of God’s Spirit, you can muster that kind of love for your wife.” – John MacArthur

and lastly- 5 days until race day. full of nervous butterflies!!!!

happy monday Smile & oh so ready for saturday to hurry up and get here!!!!

easter weekend

so this weekend I got to go home Smile it was much needed and very relaxing. I’m always sad to leave home…although I do love nashville.

friday night we went to celebrate rachel’s bday at a mex restaurant and then went to watch harry potter at ipc! so fun and love that movie.

saturday, my dad and I went to run to get prepared for this coming weekend’s race. I feel so relaxed and ready for the race, and even more relaxed since my dad will be running with me for half of the marathon.

then, michael and I went to shelby farms & had a picnic. michael HATES picnics, mainly because he doesn’t like to eat outside or when it’s hot. he made sandwiches & I brought sides…and drinks. he was sweet to do that for me. then we went to bass pro…which was amazing. I usually SO dislike that place, but when we got there, they were doing the “fish feeding”. and this fish “expert” guy is on a microphone talking about the different kinds of fish. then he uses different lines & bait to explain and demonstrate how different fish respond to different baits. it was really neat. they were also selling the cutest lab puppies Smile

then saturday night we went to the atkins and watched ashlyn hunt eggs and play with her easter goodies. it is a fun family tradition for us to celebrate all holidays with the atkins. I can’t wait until I have traditions like that when I have a family. I so look forward to those get togethers. then michael and I went to dinner @ mortimer’s- which is a GREAT restaurant. & then rented Unstoppable. a great movie.

easter

today, of course, was easter & a really amazing service at first evan. I love that church. I love the people there! & then my family and I stuffed ourselves silly with yummy food that my mom makes. then…I left. a short, but sweet weekend. and a reminder of my faith—in a GOD that is living and loving….and did not end things with the grave and death, but with LIFE. and HE IS RISEN, and I am forgiven.

day-dreaming

the last few days, I’ve felt like I’ve been just day-dreaming my life way. not necessarily in a bad way, but I’ve felt just like I’m going through the motions of life, doing the same thing day after day after day. today I’m day-dreaming of several things…

- this walking bridge in nashvegas. I love this bridge, especially at night. and the view of nashville from it is AMAZING.

182205548_5a04f37a87

- being a character in this movie…which comes out FRIDAY.

- I ALWAYS daydream of cleaning teeth.

- being home in a few days.

- being at the beach: (notonthehighstreet.com)

a full life

so, the pioneer woman (thepioneerwoman.com) just did a segment in her photography section on “brothers”. there is a picture (http://www.flickr.com/photos/thesnapsistersphoto/5610409425/) that displays 3 brothers sitting on a couch…the older one seems to be loving on the brother on the right. & you see the feet of the little baby brother on the left in the picture. when I read PW’s caption for this picture, I was curious as to what the picture was about. Her comment said something about a touching story that brought tears. so I clicked on the picture, which had a ton of comments on it on the flickr website & one of them directed viewers to go to this website to see the picture of cash, the little boy on the right in the picture (that the older brother was loving on):

http://acashofhope.blogspot.com/

apparently, a few days after that picture was taken, cash passed away of a brain tumor. if you watch the video from his memorial service (it’s 10 minutes long), all I could think was how happy that baby was and how full his life was with love and family and he was only 2 years old when he died. but every single picture is a perfect display of love and life.

this story caught my attention in bringing life into perspective. how we take health & even the smallest things for granted. and that small innocent life was short but so full.

14 days and counting until the MARATHON race here in nashvegas.

I’m feeling good & definitely ready to have those 26.2 miles behind me…running is definitely one of my passions/hobbies, but it is starting to wear me down.

currently, my planner looks like this for the next 2 weeks:

today, I did 20 miles. on the treadmill. it was somewhat dreadful…I watched a variety of shows. you name it, I probably watched it. from CMT top 20 countdown, to America’s Best Dance Crew, to Giada at Home, to ESPN news…haha. a plethora of entertainment.

currently, I am recovering, laying in my bed, & about to read water for elephants. I love this book & cannot wait to see the movie!

a perfect night

summed up in few words:
a good run and walk. and the sunset. in perfect weather.

an awesome headband to keep my sweaty hair back:

nike shorts & long sleeve shirt.
S.Bucks, tall coffee with white mocha...no wood. :)
my laptop, blogging, stationary, journal, iTunes/Pandora, & Bible. oh, and planner...so i can unrealistically and obsessively "plan" my life.

i'm excited for this beautiful spring weather, the smiling elephant thai restaurant on thursday with my vball crew, the weekend, no work on next monday morning due to TCAP, Good Friday in a little over a week (which means MEMPHIS), & the marathon in 18 days.

all grown up, and feeling audrey hepburnish

tumblr_kpp6ctGaob1qzaup4o1_500_large

so tonight I had my first ever

conference call

can I just tell you how adult/grown-up it made me feel…I didn’t think it was going to be as casual as it was, but I didn’t really know what to expect. the conference call was regarding the Tennessee Dental Hygienists’ Association annual session I’m going to this weekend. I am serving as a “delegate” and we go over by-laws and present them before the Speaker of the House and the Board and we can amend/go over them and pass laws regarding our field. cool, huh? I am really excited, actually. They hold these every year, as required by ADHA which is the national association. I’ll post about it when it is over on saturday. I am also planning on making a trip to martin next wkend to visit mcwiggins…he took a job in memphis that will start in june- YAY. so excited. I need some suggestions to pass the time between now & then! I am feeling audrey hepburnish because of these pictures I saw here & I feel like this every morning…

and I love these:

Happy thursday tomorrow!

purpose

lately I’ve been thinking about prayer & submitting my will to the Lord’s. especially when it comes to my sin, desires, & things I want to be in control of. I’ve been struggling with all of these & how to actually pray for them. and when I catch myself trying to control something or I see my sin & ugliness, I just lift up a prayer of “Lord, I pray you will draw me out of this..help me trust YOU alone & pull me to YOU & YOUR WORD”. I like the verses in john 15 that say, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you…” I think other versions say “abide”. my prayer today is that I would “abide” only in Christ. only in His Word. when temptations for sin-being in control-worldly desires-etc come, that I would continually have my mind stayed on the Lord. these are verses that come to mind when trying to be in control-

“plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

“the fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor”.

“He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.”

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”

“in his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.”

“Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the FEAR of the Lord a man avoids evil”.

happy hump day! & enjoy these lyrics from an old bob dylan song:

When the rain
Is blowing in your face
And the whole world
Is on your case
I could offer you
A warm embrace
To make you feel my love
When the evening shadows
And the stars appear
And there is no one there
To dry your tears
I could hold you
For a million years
To make you feel my love
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/adele/make_you_feel_my_love.html ]
I know you
Haven't made
Your mind up yet
But I would never
Do you wrong
I've known it
From the moment
That we met
No doubt in my mind
Where you belong
I'd go hungry
I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling
Down the avenue
No, there's nothing
That I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love
The storms are raging
On the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
Though winds of change
Are throwing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing
Like me yet
I could make you happy
Make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends
Of the Earth for you
To make you feel my love

Amish Definition A·mish [ mish ] To hear the pronunciation, install Silverlight PLURAL NOUN 1. members of U.S. Protestant group: members of a Protestant group who migrated from Europe to North America in the 18th century. The Amish seek to maintain a lifestyle based on the Bible.

Yes, the title of this post is the definition for an Amish person.

Yesterday, my friend Rachel and I went on a mini road trip to visit an Amish community near the Alabama and TN state lines. Let me preface what I’m going to describe by saying that I was a little nervous/scared/and did not know what to expect. (and Rachel had been before with her mom).

DSCN0268

Well, we pulled into the store/market area off the highway to purchase our tickets for the wagon ride tour. the wagon was a covered home-made wagon with a horse named Cody pulling me, Rachel, and 2 older women who were taking the tour to look for furniture and get prices. Rachel and I chose to sit up front with the driver…right behind the horse. Not sure if it was the best decision, but it turned out well because the entire buggy ride we asked the poor driver 1 million questions. He was what appeared to be a high-schooler from Lawrenceberg (a very small town in TN). He had the most country accent I have ever heard in my life. And I went to school in Auburn…and this was by far the countriest accent.

DSCN0267

We rode around this community for about an hour. The first 15 minutes was spent getting to the actual homes and barns. There are no power lines/cars/light poles. It is just bare land with very simple white houses and sheds and barns and LOTS of cows, horses, and some pigs and chickens. On the mailboxes (which Amish people DO use the US postal service) were hand-written signs listing what the family was selling such as jams/jellies, bread, peanut brittle, tables, chairs, birdhouses, sorghum (which we learned is molasses) etc. A typical sized family is about 12 or 13 children. The Amish people view big families as a blessing from God, and they do not believe in birth control. the first house we pulled up to was selling jams and baskets. We walked up to their “store” shed and an older man came out and 2 little girls were standing on the porch in front of the door waving and smiling. All of the Amish people make their clothes, but they order the fabric from a catalog and have the fabric shipped. They order their shoes and hats. The 2 little girls were wearing long sleeve dresses, aprons, and bonnets. What is funny is that their primary language is German and in school (which they attend school from 7 years old to 14 years old) they learn English, reading, and writing. No science or math. And they don’t go to school past 8th grade, because the Amish believe that at that point, you have learned all the skills you will need to live in the Amish community. and after 8th grade you work, and work, and work. and make baskets, plow fields, milk cows, etc. So all I could think about when I saw the little kids throughout the tour was that was going to be their life. They really had no choice, because you are born into the Amish life, you can’t join it unless you are born into it. and if you are to leave the Amish community for any reason, you are shunned and your family and the entire Amish people will not speak to you. Marriages are practically arranged. We learned that your family sets you up with 3 different people and you go on dates with them (with a younger sibling in tow to monitor the date) and then you can choose among the 3. So it is not incestual, usually the girl or boy is sent off to another community to meet their significant other. It is not common for anyone to leave the Amish lifestyle.

DSCN0270

Rachel bought a fried pineapple pie from one of the families. I bought some Amish bread & apple butter- Yum! We continued on the tour asking a million questions. We made several stops at different homes to look at the furniture. The men were hard at work making baskets, tables, chairs, bookshelves. You name the furniture, they had it. We didn’t see very many women. At some homes we stopped at, the women would come to the front screened-in door and just look at us. Something that really amazed me was EVERYTHING was practically hand-made. Their homes were built by the men in their community. The schoolhouses were made in like the 1940’s by them. It was like something off of Little House on the Prairie. I also found it interesting that the Amish rarely leave their community, but if they do, it is to go to Wal-Mart to buy food (cereal, sugar, simple groceries they cannot make) and tupperware, dishes, etc. SO interesting!

DSCN0269

It was such a different experience and something I didn’t think I would find so interesting. We weren’t allowed to take pictures within the community, because Amish people believe it is vain and it takes away their soul & they will go to Hell. Rachel & I were able to sneak a few pictures of some of the buildings and one of us on the wagon ride!

Jesus Calling

i am calling you in a life of constant communion with Me. basic training includes learning to live above yourcircumstances, even while interacting on that cluttered plane of life. you yearn for a simplified lifestyle, so that your communication with Me can be uninterrupted. but i challenge you to relinquish the fantasy of an uncluttered world. accept each day just as it comes, and find Me in the midst of it all.
talk with Me about every aspect of your day, including your feelings. remember that your ultimate goal is not to control or fix everything around you; it is to keep communing with Me. a successful day is one in which you have stayed in touch with Me, even if many things remaine undone at the end of the day. do not let your to-do list (written or mental) become an idol directing your life. instead, ask My Spirit to guide you moment by moment. He will keep you close to Me.
